MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company proudly announces the delivery of the MSC Oliver, marking the second addition to its impressive 19,224 TEU ‘Olympic Series’. The vessel was officially inaugurated on March 30 at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) yard located in Busan, South Korea. This unveiling follows just two months after the MSC Oscar, currently holding the title of the world's largest containership by TEU capacity, joined the fleet. The MSC Oliver carries significance for its namesake, being the nephew of Diego Aponte, the President and CEO of MSC, and son of Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises, who was present during the festive ceremony. The MSC Oscar was named in honor of Aponte’s son, Oscar. MSC Oliver is set to commence operations on the Albatross Service that connects Asia and Europe later this week.

The maritime world is abuzz as the massive container ship MSC Oliver, boasting a capacity of 19,224 TEU, successfully returned from its sea trials this past weekend on March 22. Set to join the Mediterranean Shipping Company, MSC Oliver is scheduled for delivery next month from the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard located in Okpo, South Korea. This colossal vessel will accompany its sister ship, MSC Oscar, which has held the title of the largest ship by TEU capacity since its launch in November 2014. Both ships will operate along the Albatross service route, enhancing MSC’s new East-West trade lanes that connect Asia and Europe. MSC Oliver and Oscar are the first of six ultra-large container ships (ULCS) in the Olympic Series, with plans to deliver an additional 18 vessels each exceeding 19,000 TEU by 2016. All six ships in this series are expected to be handed over by November 2015, further solidifying MSC's position in the global shipping industry.

Furthermore, MSC Oscar holds a personal connection for Aponte, as it is named after his son. Aponte passionately discussed the MSC fleet's integral role amidst the unpredictable landscape of the container shipping industry, often regarded as a barometer for global trade. He emphasized the pivotal role of containerization in fostering globalization, revealing that containers account for 65% of global transportation. Founded in 1970 and headquartered in Geneva, Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. has risen to become the world's second-largest shipping line in terms of container vessel capacity. As of December 2014, MSC's diverse fleet comprises 471 vessels with a combined capacity of 2,435,000 TEUs, operating across all major ports worldwide.
