MSC Oscar: The World's Largest Container Ship Makes Its Debut in Rotterdam
On the evening of Tuesday, March 3, the MSC Oscar made its grand entrance at the APM1 terminal in Rotterdam. This colossal vessel, measuring 396 meters in length and 59 meters in width, boasts an impressive capacity to hold 19,224 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units), earning the title of the largest container ship globally, according to a press release from the Port of Rotterdam. The MSC Oscar journeyed to Rotterdam from Algeciras and is set to depart for Bremerhaven the following night, March 4. Following that, the ship will return to Rotterdam on March 9, where it will dock at the ECT in the Delta East terminal. The voyage does not end there, as the MSC Oscar will continue its route to the Mediterranean via Felixstowe. With a robust presence in the shipping industry, the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) ranks as the world’s second-largest container shipping line, regularly docking ten to fifteen vessels in Rotterdam each week. Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, expressed enthusiasm over the MSC Oscar’s arrival, stating, 'We are very pleased with the MSC Oscar’s debut. Her shipping itinerary underscores Rotterdam’s significance as a key port for this class of vessels. The MSC Oscar will be visiting Rotterdam twice, and MSC has established a strong foothold here in recent years. I am optimistic that our collaboration with MSC will deepen further in the future.'
MSC Oscar: The World’s Largest Containership Unveiled at DSME Shipyard
In a significant milestone for the shipping industry, the MSC Oscar was officially christened at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard in South Korea on Thursday. This remarkable vessel is now recognized as the largest containership in the world by carrying capacity, boasting an impressive capability of 19,224 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). This capacity narrowly surpasses the previous record held by the MV CSCL Globe, which can carry 19,100 TEU, along with her four pending sister ships. Although MSC Oscar stretches 395.4 meters in length, it is shorter than both the 400-meter-long CSCL Globe and the Maersk Triple-E series, which can accommodate around 18,000 TEU. The MSC Oscar features a beam of 59 meters, comparable to that of the Maersk Triple-E, and wider than CSCL Globe's 58.6-meter measurement. Set to join MSC's Albatross service later this month, this behemoth will facilitate maritime trade routes between Asia and Northern Europe. Additionally, a second vessel of this class is anticipated to be delivered by April, further solidifying MSC's position in the global shipping arena.
