MSC Paloma Makes History as Largest Container Ship to Navigate the Adriatic Sea

Dec 16, 2016 14:05

The MSC Paloma, a colossal 14,000 TEU container ship, has made maritime history by becoming the largest vessel ever to enter the Adriatic Sea. Previously, this record was held by the MSC Luciana, which has a capacity of 11,660 TEU. While the MSC Paloma isn’t the longest ship in the fleet, it boasts an impressive width of 51 meters, making it the widest container vessel ever to dock at the Port of Koper. After its arrival from Piraeus, the ship is on course for Trieste. The MSC Paloma is part of the 2M Alliance, a strategic partnership that connects the North Adriatic with the Far East. This alliance includes the Swiss shipping giant MSC and Denmark-based Maersk, the two largest container shipping lines globally, which also dominate TEU handling at Koper. Notably, the Paloma entered Koper with a draught of 12.6 meters, despite having a maximum draught capacity of 16 meters, and is set to manage the loading and unloading of 3,600 TEU. This monumental event not only highlights the capabilities of the modern shipping industry but also signifies the growing importance of the Adriatic Sea as a key logistics hub.

This update marks a significant step in the ongoing evolution of global shipping operations.
