On December 12, 2014, the container ship MSC Rachele found itself in a precarious situation when it ran aground on the Middle Plate near the village of Grietje along the Wester Scheldt, just off Terneuzen at 2:25 PM. In response to the emergency, several tugs, including Braakman, Evergem, Gent, Multratug 20, Multratug 22, Multratug 26, Multratug 27, Union 5, and Union Emerald, were dispatched to assist in refloating the stranded vessel. The operation proved successful; by 4:05 PM, the MSC Rachele was pulled off the sand bar in a stern-first maneuver and subsequently towed to an anchorage at the Put of Terneuzen for inspection purposes. Tugs Evergem, Union Emerald, and Union Hawk remained on hand to keep the ship steady at the anchorage. During this time, traffic on the route to Antwerp was halted until approximately 5 PM due to the grounding incident. The MSC Rachele had been traveling from Valencia and was destined for Antwerp.
