Incidents in the Kiel Canal: Petkum Grounded After Engine Failure

Jan 14, 2019 08:59

In the early hours of January 14, 2019, at 12:45 a.m., the vessel 'Petkum' encountered significant engine issues while navigating the Kiel Canal, specifically in the section at Oldenbüttel, while traveling westbound from Helsinki to Bremerhaven. The failing engines caused the ship to become lodged in the embankment by its stern. Luckily, the tugboat 'Wulf 7' (IMO: 9183075), which was also directing its course westward after escorting the bulk carrier 'Angelic Glory' to Kiel, was dispatched to assist. After a successful operation, the tug managed to free the 'Petkum' from its precarious position. As a result of the incident, ship traffic was temporarily suspended between Oldenbüttel and Breiholz. Once the 'Petkum' was once again floating, it was directed to Brunsbüttel where it docked at the Ostermoor Oil Terminal at approximately 7:00 a.m. for necessary inspections. Following the completion of these checks, the 'Petkum' departed at 11:50 p.m., resuming its journey toward Bremerhaven, with an estimated time of arrival on January 15.
