Historic Arrival of MSC Roma: The Largest Container Ship to Dock at Port of Savannah
In a monumental event for the maritime industry, the MSC Roma, a post-Panamax-class container vessel, made its debut at the Port of Savannah on Friday morning, precisely at 8:30 a.m. This colossal ship, measuring an impressive 1,100 feet in length and 150 feet in width, has the capacity to transport 9,200 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), marking a significant milestone for the port. Due to current depth limitations of the Panama Canal, post-Panamax vessels like the MSC Roma cannot transit the canal, making its arrival in Savannah even more noteworthy. The vessel was expertly navigated upriver by seasoned Savannah River pilot Rick Wesley and assisted by the robust tractor tugs from Moran Towing Corp., namely the Edward J. Moran and the James A. Moran. The docking was skillfully handled by pilot Larry Missroon, ensuring a smooth transition for this record-breaking ship into the Garden City Terminal. This landmark occasion highlights the ever-growing capabilities of the Port of Savannah and its importance in global shipping logistics.
