Houthi Missile Attack Attempt on Container Ship 'Sarah V' in Arabian Sea
On June 24, 2024, in a harrowing incident off the coast of Yemen, the container ship 'Sarah V', navigating the Arabian Sea approximately 246 nautical miles southeast of Nishtun, came under attack by Houthi militants. The vessel, which was making its way from Cristobal to Abu Dhabi, reported a sudden explosion nearby, as noted by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). Fortunately, the crew remained unharmed, and the ship continued its journey towards the next port of call. According to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC), the 'Sarah V' was targeted by a missile; however, it narrowly escaped damage as the projectile splashed down in the water about 50 meters away from the ship's starboard side. The assault is believed to be driven by a perceived link to Israeli interests.
MSC Sarah Successfully Refloated After Grounding Incident in the Dardanelles
On January 31, at approximately 10:30 PM, the containership MSC Sarah encountered trouble while navigating through the Dardanelles, specifically near Lapseki at Çardak Beldesi. The vessel, which had set sail from Sines on January 26 and was bound for Ambarli with an expected arrival on February 1, ran aground in front of the Çakar Feneri Lighthouse. Notably, the ship listed to starboard in waters that were 11 meters deep. Upon realizing the situation, the captain promptly contacted the Vessel Traffic Services Center (VTS). In response, the tugboat Kurtama 10 was dispatched to assist, securing the vessel's stern until early morning on February 1. However, due to adverse weather conditions, additional salvage power was required to safely refloat the ship. The MSC Sarah was carrying a sizable cargo of 38,955 tons and had a crew of 29 members on board, along with 2,506 tons of fuel and 179 tons of diesel. Remarkably, at around 3 PM on February 1, the vessel managed to refloat itself and was subsequently escorted to a secure anchorage off Şevketiye for a thorough inspection. It is important to note that traffic in the Dardanelles had been suspended from January 31 at 10:15 PM until February 1 at 10:15 AM. For further updates and visual documentation, Turkish sources have shared photos and videos of the incident.
