South African Dock Workers Halt Unloading of 'Zim Shanghai' Following Calls for Solidarity
In a strong display of solidarity, South African dockworkers have collectively decided to boycott the unloading of the cargo vessel 'Zim Shanghai', which has been docked at the Port of Durban since May 19, 2021. This significant move was initiated by the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU), responding to an appeal from the Palestine General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU). The PGFTU urged unions around the world to refuse to unload ships and goods originating from Israel, marking a crucial moment in global labor movements. SATAWU emphasized that this action is part of a broader initiative to challenge Zim lines and their operations, reflecting growing international support for Palestinian rights. The solidarity displayed by South African dockers sends a powerful message regarding the intersection of labor rights and social justice on the global stage.
ZIM Enhances Service Network with New Wilmington and Charleston Calls
In a significant move to bolster its service coverage, ZIM has announced the addition of the ports of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Charleston, South Carolina, to its Asia-USEC portfolio, as revealed in a recent press release. The inclusion of Wilmington will commence with the ZIM Seven Star service (Z7S) starting in May 2017. The updated route for Z7S will be Da Chan Bay β Yantian β Cai Mep β Port Kelang β Colombo β New York β Norfolk β Wilmington β Savannah β Port Kelang β Da Chan Bay. This new addition provides an exclusive direct link from South China, Southeast Asia, and the Indian Subcontinent to Wilmington, offering outstanding service to various inland points across the U.S. Additionally, Charleston will be incorporated into the enhanced All-water ZIM Container Service Pacific (ZCP), which is the premium connection between China, Korea, the U.S. South Atlantic and Gulf, and the Caribbean. The ZCP also features a direct service to Halifax and ensures rapid transit times from the U.S. East Coast and the Caribbean to China, with Qingdao serving as the first port of call. The updated rotation will include Qingdao β Ningbo β Shanghai β Pusan β Kingston β Savannah β Charleston β Norfolk β New York β Halifax β Kingston β Qingdao. The inaugural vessel scheduled to arrive in Wilmington will be the ZIM SHANGHAI V. 62, with an ETA at Da Chan Bay on May 14 and Wilmington on June 17. Meanwhile, the first ship to reach Charleston will be the JULIETTE RICKMERS 19, expected at Ningbo on April 17 and Charleston on May 18.
Pro-Palestinian Protests Halt Cargo Unloading at Port of Oakland
On September 27, 2014, the container ship 'Zim Shanghai', identified by IMO number 9336485, was unable to discharge its cargo at the Port of Oakland due to protests staged by around 200 demonstrators opposing Israeli actions in Gaza. The vessel had aimed to unload its shipment but found itself at the center of heated tensions related to the ongoing conflict. As members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union attempted to fulfill their work duties, they faced physical threats and blockages to their vehicles from the protesters, leading to a refusal to unload the ship. After remaining anchored with its cargo onboard throughout the day, the 'Zim Shanghai' departed Oakland that evening and was projected to arrive at the Port of Los Angeles by September 30.
