MSC Shannon III Resumes Journey After Anchor Issues on Western Scheldt

Feb 27, 2026 22:12

On February 27, 2026, the container ship 'MSC Shannon III' encountered anchor difficulties while navigating the Western Scheldt near Waarde. The incident unfolded in the afternoon, causing the vessel to become stranded, but after several hours, it successfully continued on its journey without impacting other maritime traffic. The ship was traveling from Antwerp to Montreal when it experienced complications with its anchor. Concerns arose regarding the connection between the vessel and its anchor at that time. In response, Rijkswaterstaat dispatched a patrol boat to the scene. Fortunately, the 'MSC Shannon III' was positioned adequately, ensuring that there were no interruptions to passing vessels. Additionally, the outgoing tide did not hinder the ship, which boasts a draft of 10.3 meters, preventing it from becoming lodged in the sediment. The problematic anchor was located on the waterway’s edge and was ultimately freed, resting on the bottom of the Western Scheldt along with a section of the chain. It has been determined that MSC will need to arrange for its removal. Around 4:00 p.m., the 'MSC Shannon III' was able to set sail once more, with an estimated time of arrival in Montreal set for March 7. Engine Room Blaze Aboard MSC Shannon in Gulf of Finland

Nov 07, 2021 13:28

In the early hours of November 7, 2021, a significant fire erupted in the engine room of the MSC Shannon while navigating through the western Gulf of Finland, approximately southwest of Helsinki. The vessel, which was on a journey from Antwerp to Le Havre, was carrying a considerable cargo of over 1,200 containers and had 24 crew members aboard at the time. Emergency services were quickly mobilized, with the Finnish rescue squadron and the patrol vessel Turva (IMO: 9650377) responding promptly to the distress signal. To assess the situation, a naval rescue helicopter conducted a reconnaissance flight over the MSC Shannon, and a Dornier surveillance aircraft was dispatched to the scene as well. Additionally, the Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG) from both Southwestern Finland and Helsinki were put on standby, prepared to deploy rescue helicopters if necessary. By the afternoon of the same day, the MSC Shannon was safely anchored at coordinates 59° 42.00' N 023° 38.17' E, ensuring the safety of its crew while containment and recovery efforts were underway.
