MSC Idil Concludes Coast Guard Assistance After Onboard Explosion

May 24, 2012 23:15

On May 21, the U.S. Coast Guard wrapped up an extensive 11-day operation concerning the container ship MSC Idil, which had experienced a significant explosion on May 11 while traveling to Barcelona, roughly 60 nautical miles north of Puerto Rico. Following necessary temporary repairs to the vessel's hull, the MSC Idil is now proceeding to Freeport, where the Mediterranean Shipping Company plans to conduct further evaluations of the ship's condition and investigate the root cause of the explosion. During the critical incident, the MSC Idil was carrying a substantial amount of fuel, including 588,000 gallons of fuel oil and 62,000 gallons of diesel. Remarkably, the ship's crew managed to maintain complete control over their cargo, preventing any pollution risks to the surrounding environment. The cooperative efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard, along with several partners such as DonJon-Smit, Atlantic Diving, Borinquen Towing, and San Juan Towing, played a pivotal role in the response operation. This involved multiple units, including a 45-foot Response Boat from San Juan, a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement, and cutters like Matinicus, Sapelo, and Key Largo. Furthermore, Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopters from Air Station Borinquen and an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft from Air Station Miami participated in monitoring and support operations. Notably, a Customs and Border Protection Caribbean Air and Marine Branch marine patrol aircraft also contributed to the initial response efforts. MSC Collaborates with DonJon-Smit for Salvage of MSC Idil Near Puerto Rico

May 15, 2012 09:41

On May 14, 2012, the U.S. Coast Guard intensified its oversight of the salvage operations concerning the 'MSC Idil', a container ship situated approximately 70 nautical miles north of Puerto Rico. The Coast Guard Cutter 'Key Largo', a 110-foot patrol vessel based in San Juan, was actively present at the scene, ready to provide immediate rescue assistance and ensure the safety of the crew as well as safeguard the marine environment. The crew aboard the 'MSC Idil' effectively stabilized the situation, utilizing onboard water pumps to manage flooding and maintain the vessel's stability. Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the owner of the ship, has engaged the services of DonJon-Smit, a prominent commercial salvage company, to carry out a comprehensive salvage assessment and necessary repairs. Representatives from DonJon-Smit boarded the vessel on the afternoon of May 12 to begin their evaluation. Their work will persist until a feasible plan for temporary repairs is established. Notably, the 'MSC Idil' contains a significant fuel load, with 588,000 gallons of fuel oil and 62,000 gallons of diesel aboard, heightening the urgency of the salvage operation.
