Three Vessels Collide in Bejaia Port Incident

Dec 07, 2020 10:22

On the evening of December 5, 2020, a significant maritime accident occurred at the port of Béjaia when the container ship 'Vega Sigma' experienced an electric failure while unmooring from berth 22. This malfunction led to the vessel colliding with the docked container ship 'Atlantic North' at berth 24, where cargo operations were underway. The collision caused a 64-ton mobile crane, which was engaged in loading containers, to topple over, injuring the crane operator who was subsequently transported to Khellil Amarane Hospital for medical attention. Due to the force of the impact, the 'Atlantic North' was set in motion, subsequently striking the stern of the bulk carrier 'OWL' (IMO: 9441386), which was busy unloading sugar at the time. Both vessels sustained significant hull damage, with the 'Atlantic North' suffering a breach that will necessitate repairs before it can set sail again. This incident has raised concerns regarding safety protocols in port operations and the reliability of machinery on board vessels.
