On July 3, 2012, the MSC Sola made maritime history by becoming the largest container ship to ever reach a South African port. This formidable vessel arrived offshore in Durban late in the afternoon and was set to be expertly guided into the harbor by a team of four tugs on July 5. After its Durban stop, the MSC Sola had plans to continue its journey to the Ngqura Container Terminal located in the Eastern Cape on July 9. Remarkably, this significant entry was made possible only after the completion of Transnet's R300 million project in 2010, which involved widening and deepening the harbor entrance. Prior to this crucial development, the MSC Sola would not have been able to access Durban due to the harbor having a depth of just 12.8 meters.
