In a concerning incident at the Port of Los Angeles on October 23, 2010, three dock workers required hospitalization due to exposure to a chemical spill aboard the cargo ship APL Sweden, IMO 9231262. The chemical in question, xylenol, is often employed in pesticide formulations. The spill was detected around 4 p.m. while the vessel was docked at Berth 303. According to a fire department representative, approximately two gallons of the chemical leaked, leading to respiratory issues for the three workers. Although the situation prompted the evacuation of the ship, no evacuations on land were necessary as hazardous materials teams quickly responded to assess and manage the spill.
