Critical Medivac of Injured Officer Aboard MSC Tiger F Near Haldia

Aug 28, 2024 10:57

On August 26, 2024, at approximately 1:45 PM, a distress call was made from the cargo vessel ‘MSC Tiger F,’ which was on its way to Haldia. The vessel's 3rd officer had suffered a critical injury while working on deck, resulting in two deep cuts on his forehead and a laceration to his left index finger. The severity of the situation escalated as he began to bleed profusely and subsequently lost consciousness. In response to the dire circumstances, the ship's master immediately sought assistance from the Kolkata Port Trust and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Chennai for an urgent medical evacuation. The Indian Coast Guard promptly dispatched the patrol vessel 'Anmol,' which set sail at 3:30 PM, aiming to reach the injured officer as swiftly as possible. Positioned off Sandheads, the 'Anmol' was directed towards Sagar Island to facilitate immediate boarding. The medical team from 'Anmol' successfully boarded the MSC Tiger F at 6:30 PM. They quickly assessed the officer's condition and provided essential medical aid, effectively stopping the severe bleeding. Although the officer's pulse was weak, the team’s swift intervention helped stabilize him. Given the unstable nature of his condition, evacuation during that time was deemed unsafe, so the medical team continued treatment on board while the vessel proceeded to the Haldia Dock Complex, where it arrived on August 27 at 3:30 AM. The injured officer was then safely evacuated and handed over to shore-based medical facilities, with the Coast Guard medical team overseeing the transfer.
