On February 9, 2021, Maersk filed a lawsuit in the Southern District of New York, targeting commodities trader Glencore for supplying contaminated fuel that allegedly caused significant damage to the 'Sofie Maersk'. This incident stems from an oil swap agreement made in February 2018, in which Maersk received 24,000 barrels of marine fuel from Glencore for delivery in Panama. Shortly after refueling, the 'Sofie Maersk', while navigating the Pacific Ocean, suffered a fuel pump malfunction and subsequently experienced a major engine failure, both linked to the fuel sourced from the contaminated shipment. The vessel required towing to Hawaii for essential repairs and to procure new fuel. Detailed examinations of the questionable fuel uncovered serious contamination, revealing the presence of plastic, fibers, black gum, paraffin, and fatty acids. As a result of this debacle, Maersk is pursuing more than $6 million in compensation from Glencore, highlighting the serious repercussions of the off-spec fuel supplied during the swap.

The incapacitated container vessel, Sofie Maersk, has been successfully towed to Honolulu by the offshore tug Maersk Launcher (IMO: 9425746). Deployed from Honolulu, the tow operation was crucial for the safe delivery of the ship, which reached its destination on March 26. The Sofie Maersk is now set for necessary repairs following the incident.

On March 4, the container vessel 'Sofie Maersk' experienced a significant engine failure while navigating through the North Pacific Ocean. By March 12, the ship was reported to be adrift at coordinates N 37° 4.88' W 167° 33.88'. The vessel is set to be towed to Honolulu for necessary repairs. With a full cargo load, all containers will remain secured on board during the repair process. The 'Sofie Maersk' is part of the eastern AC2 service, which operates routes connecting Asia to the west coast of South America. After repairs, the ship is anticipated to reach Qingdao no earlier than April 8, 2018. The vessel had departed from Lazaro Cardenas on February 19.
