Heroic Rescue at Sea: ANL Benalla Aids Distressed Yachtsman
A solo sailor, who embarked on a journey from Pittwater to Eden two weeks ago, found himself in peril but was ultimately rescued and is expected to return to Sydney by late October 17, 2012, or early the following morning. The 44-year-old yachtsman from Queensland activated his emergency beacon on the morning of October 16, roughly 320 nautical miles east of Sydney. Alone on his 11-meter yacht, the sailor was drifting farther into open waters. Responding promptly, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) initiated a search-and-rescue operation at 8:15 AM. They received valuable support from two international commercial flights: an Air Canada Boeing 777 flying from Vancouver to Sydney and an Air New Zealand A320 on its route from Auckland to Sydney. The aircraft pilots successfully pinpointed the yacht's distress location. At noon, AMSA dispatched a Dornier search-and-rescue aircraft from Essendon to the scene. The onboard crew managed to establish communication with the distressed sailor, who reported that his yacht had suffered dismasting and was running low on fuel. Later that afternoon, the cargo vessel ANL Benalla, traveling from Port Kembla to Nelson, reached the yacht, providing crucial shelter from the imposing winds until the Sydney-based water police vessel Nemesis arrived at midnight. The crew of Nemesis rescued the yachtsman, who had no alternative but to abandon his yacht under the rough conditions, with sea waves reaching heights of 3 to 4 meters. The Nemesis is now making its way back to Sydney, bringing the sailor to safety.
