Bulgarian Tug Rescues Stalled Tanker on Route to Istanbul
On October 18, 2023, the Bulgarian tugboat 'Enterprise' commenced a critical towing operation for the stranded tanker 'Pazar,' which was carrying sunflower oil bound for Istanbul. The incident unfolded approximately 70 miles east of Varna, near Kaliakra Cape, where the tanker had found itself in perilous conditions. The rescue efforts kicked off around noon, with initial actions focused on removing water and drying the machinery compartment of the 'Pazar,' which was already taking on water. In response to the emergency, two Eurocopter AS565 Panther helicopters and two Cougar helicopters were deployed, standing by ready to assist with the evacuation of the 14-member crew if necessary. As night fell and the seas became increasingly treacherous, with waves reaching up to four meters, the situation demanded immediate action. When the 'Enterprise' arrived at 5 a.m., the vessel was in critical condition, with the stern dangerously close to submerging—just 30 centimeters from disaster. Through the skilled efforts of the crew aboard the 'Enterprise,' the 'Pazar' was stabilized and kept afloat. Subsequently, the tug began towing the tanker toward Varna. By 8 p.m. that evening, Bulgarian rescuers successfully transferred the 'Pazar' to the Turkish tug 'MarineTug 1,' which had been dispatched by Turkish authorities for the continuation of her journey to Istanbul. This operation highlights the importance of maritime safety and international cooperation in emergency situations at sea.
