Historic Maiden Voyage: First Mother Vessel Arrives at Chittagong Port from Korea

Mar 26, 2018 11:10

In a significant advancement for container shipping, Chittagong Port welcomed its first-ever mother vessel from Korea on Friday, marking a transformative moment for traders. This innovative transport solution has successfully reduced transit time from Korea to Bangladesh, slashing the journey down to just 14 days. Previously, shipments took nearly 30 days due to necessary stops in Singapore where containers awaited transfer via feeder vessels. The mother vessel, named Sentosa Trader, is operated by Hyundai Merchant Marine Company Ltd. On its inaugural journey, the Sentosa Trader departed from Busan Port, South Korea, as confirmed by Md Jahid Hossain, sales manager at Ocean International Ltd, the local agent for the vessel. During its voyage, it made stops at Ningbo and Shanghai in China before arriving at Singapore within 10 days. Remarkably, the vessel reached Chittagong Port in only four additional days, thanks to its ability to deliver the containers directly, eliminating the need for delays associated with feeder vessels. Carrying a significant load of 783 containers, the Sentosa Trader's arrival is a game-changer for logistics in Bangladesh, according to Golam Sarwar, the director for traffic at Chittagong Port. This development not only enhances efficiency but also solidifies Chittagong's role as a crucial hub in maritime trade. The industry looks forward to the advantages this new shipping route will bring to global trade connections.
