Indian Coast Guard Rescues Algerian Crew Member in Urgent Medevac Operation
On November 21, 2015, a life-saving operation was executed by the Indian Coast Guard, resulting in the medical evacuation of an Algerian crew member from the LNG carrier 'Mubaraz', which was en route from the UAE to Tokyo. The maritime rescue coordination center in Mumbai received an urgent call around 10:30 a.m. from the UK Coast Guard, notifying them of a critical situation onboard involving 51-year-old Ali Chemoune, who had suffered a stroke, rendering him immobile with no sensation on the right side of his body. Following the alarming report, the Indian Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (West) promptly instructed the district headquarters in Kochi to initiate the medical evacuation operation. Coordination between the vessel's master, agents, and the Coast Guard was essential to facilitate the ship's timely arrival at Kochi. The situation proved to be particularly complex, as the 'Mubaraz' lacked a suitable landing space and winching area, making the extraction of the incapacitated patient especially challenging. In the meantime, the ship's medical officer attended to Chemoune, administering first aid to stabilize his condition. With urgency in the air, the evacuation operation was carried out as expeditiously as possible. A helicopter hovered just above the deck to safely transition Chemoune to the 'Garuda', where he was taken at approximately 4:30 p.m. The evacuee was then swiftly transported to a medical trust hospital in Kochi for further treatment, ensuring he received the necessary care in a critical moment.
Emergency Medevac of Injured Crew Member from LNG Tanker Near Goa
On January 6, 2014, a critical medical evacuation took place off the coast of Goa, involving the Indian Coast Guard and the LNG tanker 'Mubaraz'. The vessel, which was en route from Futtsu to Das Island carrying liquefied natural gas, experienced an emergency when 33-year-old Filipino crew member Alberto Soriano sustained a hand fracture. A distress call was relayed to the Indian Coast Guard’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai on January 5, highlighting the urgent need for airlifting the injured crew member. Following this communication, the Coast Guard's local maritime rescue sub-centre directed the tanker to maneuver closer to the Goa coastline. Concurrently, the Coast Guard’s air enclave in Goa prepared a helicopter for the mission. On the afternoon of January 6, the helicopter launched and successfully hoisted Soriano from the vessel. After the rescue, the helicopter returned to Vasco, where the crew member was handed over to a local agent for further medical assistance. Subsequent reports confirmed that Soriano was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Chicalim.
