Tugboat Multratug 20 Under Repair in Kiel Following Engine Malfunction
The tugboat Multratug 20 faced an engine malfunction while navigating the Kiel Canal on June 27, 2016, as it traveled from Flushing to Szczecin. Currently docked at the MaK/Caterpillar facility in Kiel, the vessel is undergoing necessary repairs. Trials are tentatively scheduled for the upcoming weekend, as the crew prepares to put the tug back into service.
Tugboat Rescues Sinking Barge in Dramatic Operation
On February 26, 2014, a critical rescue operation unfolded on the Wester Scheldt when the tugboat 'Multratug 20' was dispatched to assist the beleaguered Belgian hopper barge 'Joro' (IMO: 7008292), weighing 1774 tons and built in 1965 by Lambrechts/Boom. This operation was a collaboration involving the KNRM lifeboat 'Zeemannshoop' from the Breskens station and the patrol vessel 'RWS 78'. The crew received the distress alert at 9:15 a.m. and promptly headed towards the sinking barge, situated near Hoofdplaat, just east of Breskens port. Upon arrival, the lifeboat crew ensured the safety of all personnel on board the Joro, which had begun to capsize due to water ingress. The Multratug 20 faced operational challenges as its propeller became entangled with debris, leading to concerns about drifting. To stabilize the situation, the 'Zeemannshoop' took the tug alongside, preventing further drift until a replacement barge could take over the towing responsibilities. In a commendable effort, the Multratug 20 successfully maneuvered the partially submerged barge, laden with sand, onto a nearby sandbank, averting a complete loss. Following the dramatic rescue, the tug returned safely to Flushing.
