In a significant move to bolster its environmental sustainability, Hamburg's Buss Shipping has announced plans to retrofit two of its container feeder vessels, the Condor and Corsar, with advanced Alfa Laval PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning systems. The installation is set to commence in January and February of 2016, aiming to effectively reduce sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions and optimize fuel consumption. These 1,025 TEU vessels are designed to operate within the stringent emission control areas (ECAs) of the Baltic Sea and North Sea, where regulations significantly limit SOx emissions in fuels. By integrating the hybrid PureSOx systems, Buss Shipping will enable its vessels to utilize more cost-effective heavy fuel oil while simultaneously achieving compliance with environmental standards. The decision to implement a closed-loop scrubber system stems from the challenging low-alkalinity waters commonly found between Rotterdam and St Petersburg, as well as in key ports like Hamburg, which impose zero-discharge requirements. Buss Shipping’s managing director, Torben Kölln, commented on the enhancements: 'The hybrid PureSOx systems on the Condor and Corsar will provide emission compliance with maximum flexibility and fuel economy. This will uphold the competitiveness of our offer to charter customers.'
