In a bold manifestation against illegal logging, a group of forest activists made headlines in Hobart on Saturday as they staged a protest that culminated in their boarding the Malaysian vessel, Muroran (IMO: 9403243). The protest kicked off early at 5 AM AEST, as 14 individuals connected to the Huon Valley Environment Centre attempted to stall the ship's loading process. Demonstrators managed to hold up operations for a remarkable eight hours, chaining themselves to various sections of the ship. In a particularly daring move, two activists ascended approximately 45 meters up crane cables, necessitating the intervention of the police, who employed another crane to safely retrieve them. Huon Valley Environment Centre spokeswoman Jenny Weber took the opportunity to shed light on the motive behind the protest, emphasizing that the Muroran was transporting veneer harvested from Tasmania's high-conservation-value forests.
