Freighter 'Muros' Rescued After Dragging Anchor in Ría de Viveiro
In a dramatic incident on January 23, 2019, the freighter 'Muros', with a complement of nine crew members, faced a perilous situation while navigating the waters from Aveiro to Avilés. At approximately 6:45 a.m., the vessel began to drag its anchor due to powerful northwest winds and towering waves reaching heights of five to seven meters in the Ría de Viveiro estuary. Compounding the issue, the ship’s engine initially failed to start, leaving the unburdened freighter vulnerable to drifting dangerously close to the rocky shores of A Mariña. Promptly responding to the emergency, Salvamento Marítimo deployed the rescue vessels 'SAR Gavia' and 'Salvamar Alioth' at 7:30 a.m. to provide assistance. The tugboat 'Sertosa Treinta' (IMO: 9238014), positioned nearby, successfully secured the drifting vessel and established a tow. Additionally, the Xunta de Galicia dispatched the rescue helicopter 'Pesca 2', prepared for any necessary aerial intervention. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of these maritime authorities, the Maritime Captaincy of Burela later decided to escort the 'Muros' safely to the port of Celeiro, where it arrived without incident at 10:45 a.m. Local and national law enforcement, as well as the Municipal Civil Protection Service, were on standby throughout the operation.
