Tragic Outcome: 800 Bulls Euthanized After Port Misunderstanding

Oct 12, 2022 12:41

In a heartbreaking incident at the port of Algiers, approximately 800 bulls were tragically euthanized following a two-week ordeal caused by complications over animal health records. The animals were initially loaded onto the livestock carrier 'Nader-A' after arriving at the port of Sète on August 29, 2022. The ship set sail for Algiers on September 2, arriving on September 5. However, due to discrepancies in their health documentation, the bulls remained stuck on the vessel for an agonizing 15 days before being returned to Sète on September 23, where they met a grim fate. Reports indicate that some bulls were missing crucial certifications for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), a highly infectious viral disease. Consequently, dock workers, adhering to strict orders, refused to allow the disembarkation of the animals. Unfortunately, the long confinement took a toll, leading to the loss of several stressed animals during the journey. The plight of these bulls has drawn sharp criticism from animal welfare organization Welfarm. After the discovery of three bulls deemed 'unfit for transport' resulted in their culling, the decision was made to euthanize the remaining cattle. Compounded by the fact that they had been fed fodder sourced from regions affected by foot-and-mouth disease, the bulls' carcasses were incinerated to prevent any risk of contamination. Following these events, the 'Nader-A' has remained anchored off the Sète coast since September 24.

Youzarsif-H Livestock Carrier Blocked from Paris MoU Ports

Jun 05, 2017 13:59

In a significant enforcement action, the Paris Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has detained the livestock carrier Youzarsif-H at Midia, Romania, on April 29, 2017. Flagged under Togo, the vessel is currently listed in the black category on the Paris MoU's White, Grey, and Black (WGB) list. Weighing in at 2,282 gross tons, the Youzarsif-H marks the third ship to face detention in the Paris MoU region within the past three years. As a consequence of this detention, the 1977-built vessel is barred from entering any port or anchorage in the Paris MoU region, apart from those in its flag state, Togo.

Salvage Operations Underway for Sunken Russian Vessel Near Kilyos

May 02, 2017 20:41

In a significant maritime operation, Russia has mobilized specialized teams and dispatched two salvage vessels to Istanbul following the sinking of the naval ship 'Liman'. The incident occurred on April 27, 2023, when 'Liman' collided with the cargo vessel 'Youzarsif H' approximately 29 kilometers from Kilyos on Turkey’s Black Sea coast. Equipped with advanced technologies, including the Don radar system and Bronze hydro-acoustic system, 'Liman's' wreck now poses a complex challenge for salvaging efforts. The Russian Navy has sent its highly capable search and rescue vessel 'Seliger', alongside the modern rescue ship 'SB-739', to assist in the recovery mission. The deployed teams consist of 16 naval personnel, nine technical specialists, and a professional deep-water dive crew, all tasked with recovering sensitive equipment from the sunken vessel's debris. While there is a possibility of recovering the entire ship from the depths of 90 meters, factors such as the ship's age, size, and the often tumultuous weather conditions in the Black Sea could complicate these efforts. Despite this, Russia is exercising its search and rescue rights, as the vessel sank in international waters. To date, Turkish authorities have not received any requests for assistance from Moscow regarding this situation. The collision was attributed to poor visibility caused by fog, leading 'Youzarsif H' to swiftly return to Romania post-incident to ensure the safety of the animals onboard. The ship docked at Capu Midia on April 28, highlighting the urgency of the situation at hand.
