Crane at Hai Phong International Port Faces Collapse After Collision with Nagoya Express
On June 7, 2019, at 6:30 a.m., the container ship "Nagoya Express" collided with the QC 15 crane at Hai Phong International Port (HITC) while maneuvering upstream of the Lach Huyen International Wharf. The vessel had been docked at the International Terminal since June 6, arriving from Cai Mep, Saigon. After departing in the afternoon under stormy conditions and the supervision of Tran Anh Pilot personnel, the ship drifted off course and struck the QC 15 crane, which had been contracted by CATC from Cat Lai port in Ho Chi Minh City. The crane, valued at approximately $5 million, sustained severe damage, bending significantly and precariously supported only by nearby pillars. Following the incident, "Nagoya Express" returned to the terminal where it remained until June 9 before being relocated to outer anchorage in Hai Phong. As of June 20, the vessel was anchored at coordinates 20° 35.52' N 106° 53.61' E. The Hai Phong Maritime Port Authority is currently investigating the incident in collaboration with concerned parties, and the pilot involved has been suspended from duty.
