Working Conditions Aboard the Nasico-Navigator

Tragedy struck on Thursday as two crew members of the Nasico Navigator succumbed to asphyxiation while monitoring goods in the ship's cargo hold. The victims, identified as Nguyen Van Son, the 38-year-old crew leader, and 31-year-old deckhand Dao Dinh Quynh, were found deceased in the goods vault shortly after the ship set sail from Ho Chi Minh City, heading towards Hai Phong. Their bodies were repatriated to their hometown, Hai Phong, on Friday. Managed by Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, the Nasico Navigator was previously known as My Dinh, a vessel that met a disastrous fate in late 2004 when it sank after colliding with rocks off Quang Ninh province while transporting 37 containers. Following repairs and re-certification by Vietnam Register, the ship resumed operations in May 2008 under the auspices of Nam Trieu, part of the state-owned Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin). Authorities have commenced investigations into this unfortunate incident, aiming to uncover the circumstances that led to the crew members' untimely deaths. The maritime community continues to mourn the loss and stresses the importance of safety protocols aboard vessels.
