Coast Guard Successfully Mediates Emergency from Vessel near Dutch Harbor
On May 5, 2014, a dramatic medevac operation unfolded approximately 125 miles south of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, as a crew from the Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak deployed a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to rescue a 28-year-old man aboard the bulk carrier "TW Manila." The affected crew member was experiencing symptoms akin to appendicitis and required urgent medical attention. The rescue mission was initiated after the captain of the "TW Manila," which was on its way to Mexico and located 450 miles from Dutch Harbor, contacted the Coast Guard for assistance due to the severe abdominal distress reported by his crewmember. In response, the Coast Guard’s 17th District command center mobilized an array of resources, including an additional Air Station Kodiak HC-130 Hercules airplane crew and MH-65 Dolphin helicopter team stationed on the Coast Guard Cutter Midgett in the Bering Sea. The bulk carrier was redirected towards Dutch Harbor to ensure it fell within the helicopter's operational range to complete the hoist. Despite challenging weather conditions featuring 40-mph winds and tumultuous 15 to 20-foot seas, the MH-60 Jayhawk crew successfully hoisted the sailor and transported him to Dutch Harbor. There, he was greeted by emergency medical services for a swift transfer to advanced medical care.
