In a timely response to a medical emergency, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) executed a critical medical evacuation of a Filipino crew member aboard a Liberian-registered oil tanker. The incident unfolded near La Monja Island, adjacent to Corregidor. Lieutenant Commander Algier Ricafrente, who heads the PCG Public Affairs, reported that the M/T Konstantin Jacob's captain, Ivan Angelo, reached out to the PCG Action Center, revealing that crew member A/B Raul Jogno was enduring excruciating pain due to a severe hernia. This distress call came while the vessel was approximately 100 nautical miles off the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) after having arrived from Singapore and was en route to China. PCG Commandant Admiral Ramon Liwag promptly launched the search-and-rescue operation, deploying the BRP-Nueva Vizcaya (SARV-3502) with a specialized medical team on board. The rescue vessel set sail to reach the distressed ship, located around 10 nautical miles west of La Monja Island in Cavite. By 5:34 p.m., the mission was accomplished with the successful transfer of the patient to the PCG rescue vessel, which then proceeded to transport him safely back to the PCG headquarters at South Harbor in Manila for further medical attention.
