Ongoing Response Efforts for Oil Spill in Singapore Waters
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is actively managing the containment and cleanup operations following the recent oil spill incident triggered by the collision between the 'Wan Hai 301' and the 'APL Denver'. Since January 5, a coordinated response involving 17 vessels and 222 personnel has been in effect. Cleanup efforts are focused along the western coastlines of Pulau Ubin at the OBS Jetty and Nenas Channel, where significant progress is being made. Early morning reports indicated the presence of oil patches near CAFHI Jetty, as well as on the shorelines of Pasir Ris Beach, Changi Point Ferry Terminal, Changi Sailing Club, and Changi Beach. To address these areas, contractors have been mobilized for cleanup operations. Specialized oil spill response vessels, containment booms, and recovery equipment, including harbor busters and skimmers, have been deployed to the affected sites. Additionally, the Johor Port Authority (JPA) has dispatched four anti-pollution craft to assist in the situation, and an oil boom has been strategically placed around the 'APL Denver' to mitigate further environmental risks.
Coordinated Response to Oil Spill in Johor Strait
In an ongoing effort to address the environmental challenge posed by an oil spill, authorities are working diligently to clean up approximately 300 tons of Marine Fuel Oil (MFO) 500 CST that leaked from the container ship 'APL Denver' in the Johor Strait, near Pasir Gudang Port. The clean-up process is estimated to take around a week, influenced by local weather conditions and ocean currents. Fortunately, the spill has not adversely affected the local communities, including fishermen, and has not threatened private jetties or the Sultan Iskandar Power Station. The port of Johor continues to function normally, though vessels may experience some delays when attempting to berth at the Container Terminal due to ongoing remediation efforts. A swift response from Johor Port Bhd, in collaboration with the Pasir Gudang Oil Spill Task Force, LPJ, the Department of Environment, and the South Region Marine Department, has successfully contained the spill to a limited area. Additionally, Singaporean authorities have taken immediate actions to monitor and control the spill within their own waters, as most of the oil has drifted into Singapore’s jurisdiction. Aerial surveys have identified two significant oil patches off the western coastlines of Pulau Ubin, specifically at OBS Jetty and Nenas Channel. By the evening of January 4, there were no reports of new oil sightings. The Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore, along with its contractors, have deployed nine vessels to manage the situation at OBS Jetty and Nenas Channel, where they have also positioned two skimmers and containment booms to mitigate the impact of the oil patches.
