Working Conditions Aboard the Nevzat-Kalkavan

On July 17, 2019, the U.S. Coast Guard orchestrated a dramatic rescue of a French sailor positioned 600 miles off Bermuda, utilizing the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) System. The incident began at 2:25 a.m. when the CROSS Gris Nez reported that the sailor's yacht had collided with a submerged object, leading to significant water ingress. As the situation escalated, the mariner was compelled to abandon ship and take refuge in his dinghy. In response, the Fifth Coast Guard District promptly activated the AMVER System, alerting nearby vessels to the critical emergency. Among the sea of responders was the merchant ship 'Nevzat Kalkavan', which was en route from Savannah to Algeciras. One of four vessels in the vicinity that answered the distress call, the Nevzat Kalkavan successfully retrieved the mariner from his precarious predicament, ensuring his safe passage back to shore.
