On March 29, 2019, the Cape May-Lewes ferry 'New Jersey' experienced unexpected engine issues while transporting 143 passengers across the Delaware Bay. The vessel departed from Cape May at 1 p.m., but shortly after, the starboard engine malfunctioned, leaving the ferry stranded. On April 8, 2016, officials from the Cape May-Lewes Ferry (CMLF) announced that the ferry vessel 'New Jersey' will enter an unscheduled dry-dock for essential repairs. This decision came after an underwater inspection revealed concerning conditions that necessitated immediate attention. The inspection, carried out ahead of the scheduled dry-docking, uncovered issues with sections of the hull-plate and some welds that could not be addressed while the ferry was docked at its home yard. The dry-docking process is set to take place at Caddell's Shipyard, located in Staten Island, and is expected to last approximately three weeks.
