International Aid Ships Deliver Critical Supplies to Tonga Following Tsunami Disaster

Jan 21, 2022 12:27

In a rapid response to the devastating tsunami that struck Tonga, international aid ships have begun to arrive, significantly alleviating the dire situation. The HMNZS 'Aotearoa' made its inaugural landing in Nuku’alofa on January 21, 2022, coming from New Zealand just six days post-disaster. This dedicated supply ship was joined by a Royal New Zealand Air Force C-130 Hercules, which delivered the first wave of essential disaster relief materials a day earlier, followed by additional supplies from Australia. Loaded with an impressive 250,000 liters of clean drinking water, the HMNZS 'Aotearoa' also possesses the capacity to generate 70,000 liters of water daily. With contamination issues from volcanic ash and seawater rendering local water sources unsafe, the need for potable water has emerged as one of Tonga’s most pressing challenges. In response, trucks from the National Emergency Management Office have begun to transport and distribute the vital water supplies from the ship. On January 20, the HMNZS 'Wellington' arrived before the 'Aotearoa', deploying hydrographers to assess the waterways into Nuku’alofa. Navy divers from the 'Wellington' have also been engaged to ensure the safety of port infrastructure. Preparations for further assistance are underway with the HMNZS 'Canterbury', which is set to join the effort on the evening of January 21, equipped with two NH90 helicopters. This ship is scheduled to carry vital supplies, including tarpaulins, water containers, milk powder, and engineering equipment, to support relief and recovery efforts in the region.
