The Nieuw-Statendam: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

On January 1, 2026, a tragic incident occurred when a 77-year-old woman fell overboard from the cruise ship Nieuw Statendam, approximately 40 miles off the Sabana coast. A passenger aboard the 'Nieuw Statendam', a cruise liner traveling from Rotterdam to South Queensferry, UK, experienced a heart attack while at sea. Medical personnel aboard the cruise ship quickly initiated emergency protocols and established communication with the KNRM's radio medical service. It was determined that the passenger needed immediate transfer to a hospital for further treatment. The lifeboat 'Jeanine Parqui' successfully navigated to rendezvous with the cruise ship at Berghaven. Two KNRM rescue team members were swiftly transported to the vessel equipped with a stretcher to assist in transferring the patient. Along with the passenger, a doctor and a nurse from the cruise ship were also brought aboard the lifeboat to ensure ongoing medical supervision during the transit. On April 23, 2024, the cruise ship 'Nieuww Statendam', which was on a voyage from Rotterdam to Funchal, encountered a serious medical situation approximately 91 nautical miles off the coast of A Coruña. The ship's crew quickly acted by requesting an urgent medical evacuation for a passenger suspected to be suffering from a stroke. In response, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (CCS Finisterre) mobilized the SAR helicopter Helimer 402. The helicopter successfully hoisted the patient from the vessel and transported them to A Coruña's Alvedro Airport, where an ambulance was on standby to deliver the individual to a nearby hospital for additional medical care.

On April 21, 2024, around 50 members of the climate activist group Extinction Rebellion (XR) staged a protest against cruise tourism at the Cruise Port of Rotterdam. Their efforts aimed to obstruct the docking of the cruise ship 'Nieuw Statendam', resulting in a brief delay of a few minutes. Despite their actions, the cruise vessel successfully arrived at its designated berth at 5:50 a.m. UTC.
