Major Drug Bust: 1653 Kilos of Narcotics Seized in Caribbean Operations

Apr 24, 2025 09:53

In a remarkable show of force, the Zr.Ms. 'Groningen' successfully intercepted three substantial drug shipments in the Caribbean within a single week. As reported by the Defense Ministry on April 23, 2025, the vessel seized a staggering total of 1653 kilos of narcotics, including nearly 600 kilos of hard drugs. Although these operations occurred in the first week of April, details have only recently been disclosed to the public. Last week, the 'Groningen' departed from her temporary base in Curaçao and is rumored to be heading back to her home port in Den Helder. While the Ministry of Defence has opted to withhold further details for security reasons, the progress of the naval ship has been a topic of interest. The Zr.Ms. 'Groningen' has been stationed in the Caribbean since January 23, 2025, and has been highly effective, intercepting nearly 3,500 kilos of cocaine during her deployment. One of the most significant operations took place on February 2, where an impressive 2,820 kilos of cocaine were seized after the smugglers’ vessel was halted by strategic shots fired from an onboard helicopter, which disabled their engine. Five suspects were apprehended during this operation and subsequently handed over to the American Coast Guard along with the seized drugs. As the 'Groningen' concludes her mission, the Zr.Ms. 'Friesland' is set to take over her responsibilities in the Caribbean. However, the specific arrival date of the 'Friesland' at the Parera naval base in Willemstad remains undisclosed due to similar security considerations.

Search Efforts Conclude for Missing Smugglers in Caribbean Drug Operation

Jun 07, 2024 09:41

The search for three individuals believed to be smugglers has been officially called off following a dramatic counter-narcotics operation in the Caribbean Sea on June 4, 2024. This operation involved the U.S. Coast Guard, the Royal Netherlands Navy, and the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard, who were pursuing a vessel suspected of trafficking illegal drugs. During the early hours, a Royal Netherlands Navy ship, equipped with a U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement team, spotted a suspicious vessel in international waters. Instead of complying with signals to stop, the suspect vessel accelerated and veered towards the Dutch Navy's fast-raiding interception and special forces craft (FRISC), prompting the crew to act in self-defense. In response to the escalating threat, the FRISC boarding team, composed of both Dutch and U.S. Coast Guard personnel, discharged their weapons, leading to a fire that ultimately caused the smuggling vessel to sink. Unfortunately, three suspected smugglers were seen going overboard and have since not been recovered. Fortunately, all team members from the combined law enforcement units were reported safe, with no injuries reported. The operation involved various assets, including the Royal Netherlands Navy ships HNLMS 'Groningen' and HNLMS 'Pelikaan', as well as helicopters and cutters from the Kustwacht Caribisch Gebied, specifically the helicopter and cutter 'Jaguar'.
