Heroic Rescue at Sea: Coast Guard and Good Samaritans Save Distressed Sailors

Jan 01, 2020 15:19

On December 29, 2019, a remarkable rescue operation unfolded 656 miles west-southwest of the Hawaiian Islands, as the U.S. Coast Guard collaborated with the crews of the 'Kalamazoo' and 'Nobility' to save the distressed crew of the 42-foot sailing vessel 'Coco Haz III'. The 'Nobility', which was en route to South Korea, and the 'Kalamazoo,' headed from Yokohama to Hawaii, played vital roles in locating the sailors. Three crew members were successfully rescued by the 'Kalamazoo', reportedly in good condition, although one individual may have sustained a concussion as assessed by a flight surgeon during transit to Honolulu, where their arrival was anticipated later that week. The rescue mission involved extensive aerial searches over several days, utilizing the resources of a Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules and a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon aircraft. Additionally, the Coast Guard Cutter 'Joseph Gerczak (WPC 1126)' launched from Honolulu, though it had to turn back shortly upon reaching the area due to low fuel levels. Weather forecasts indicated challenging conditions, with winds ranging from 17 to 28 mph and sea heights of 6 to 10 feet. The Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) in Honolulu received an emergency notification on the evening of December 23 about an unreported sailing vessel making its way from Osaka to Waikiki, Oahu. At the time, the last known position of the 'Coco Haz III' was about 805 statute miles northwest of Oahu. In coordination with the Japan Coast Guard, the JRCC made efforts to establish contact with the vessel's owner. On December 25, it was confirmed through discussions with the liaison from Japan that the ‘Coco Haz III’ had indeed suffered a dismasting incident on December 19, with the last communication between the crew and the boat's owner occurring on December 20. The crew had ample supplies on board, including 500 gallons of fuel, two weeks' worth of food, and one month’s supply of water, as well as an orange life raft during the incident. The crew consisted of two U.S. nationals and one Japanese national.
