Finland's Icebreaker Nordica Set for Arctic Mission in Canada
In a significant development for Arctic operations, the Finnish state-owned icebreaking company Arctia has announced a contract to send its renowned icebreaker, the 'Nordica,' to support Canada’s Arctic initiatives starting in late 2026. This move aligns with the Canadian Government's strategy to bolster its presence and capabilities in the Northern regions. The chartering of 'Nordica' will be managed through the Qikiqtaaluk Horizon Arctic Services (QHAS), an Inuit-owned partnership, with Horizon Naval Engineering acting as the contracting authority. The icebreaker will enhance the Canadian Coast Guard's operations by providing essential civilian support, which includes icebreaking, ice management, search and rescue missions, and environmental response efforts. Importantly, the vessel is restricted from engaging in any governmental, law enforcement, or defense missions. This Finnish icebreaker is expected to operate autonomously in collaboration with the Canadian Coast Guard, offering vital icebreaking and navigation assistance in the challenging waterways of the Canadian Arctic. Initially set for a one-year term, the contract includes options for extension, highlighting the strategic importance of this partnership as climate change continues to alter Arctic conditions.
Nordica Icebreaker Joins Gulf of Finland Marine Traffic Operations
On February 28, 2018, Arctia announced that its versatile icebreaker, MSV Nordica, has commenced operations in the Gulf of Finland, marking its entry as the eighth icebreaker for the Finnish icebreaking season. Positioned strategically, Nordica will assist in facilitating marine traffic in this busy maritime region. Joining the efforts are several other Arctia icebreakers, including Kontio, Otso, Polaris, Urho, and Fennica, which are currently active in the Bothnian Bay and Kvarken regions. Meanwhile, Voima and Sisu are deployed in the eastern Gulf of Finland, ensuring smooth passage for vessels navigating these icy waters. Captain Jyri Viljanen, Master of the MSV Nordica, stated, "We are on our way to the Gulf of Finland via the Archipelago Sea, where we will assess the ice conditions along the fairways leading to Förby and Taalintehdas. Initially, our operations will focus on areas east of Kantvik." Arctia Ltd., a prominent shipping company, boasts a fleet of eight robust icebreakers dedicated to ice management, chartering services, and specialized marine operations both within Finland and internationally. Notably, in July 2017, the Nordica successfully made its second crossing of the Northwest Passage, setting records for both the earliest and latest transits. With a legacy spanning 140 years, Arctia embodies Finland's esteemed icebreaking tradition, operating one of the world's most powerful icebreaker fleets. The icebreaking services in Finland are funded through a market-oriented system dependent on fairway dues, with Finnish icebreakers also available for charter in polar regions.
MSV Nordica Brings Arctic Expertise to the 2017 Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavík
The 2017 Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavík, Iceland, welcomed the Finnish multipurpose icebreaker MSV Nordica, which docked at Miðbakki berth near the iconic Harpa Conference Center. Representing a wealth of Arctic experience, MSV Nordica has been pivotal in various maritime operations, including fairway icebreaking and ice management across the Arctic regions. Notably, this vessel has made history by holding records for the earliest and latest transits of the Northwest Passage, having successfully navigated it twice, most recently in July with a team of researchers onboard. The vessel is owned by Arctia Offshore Ltd., which sent MSV Nordica to the assembly to commemorate Finland's centenary of independence and its leadership role in the Arctic Council. Adding to the significance, Arctia's President and CEO, Mr. Tero Vauraste, is also the current chair of the Arctic Economic Council, highlighting the ongoing commitment to Arctic cooperation and development.
Nordica to Navigate Northwest Passage in July 2023
Arctia is set to make waves as its versatile icebreaker, the MSV Nordica, embarks on an expedition through the Northwest Passage (NWP) this coming July. This historic maritime route links the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, weaving through the picturesque waterways of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The voyage is scheduled to kick off from Vancouver, Canada, on July 5th, with the ship making its way to Nuuk, Greenland, expected to arrive by August 1st. This journey is part of the Arctic 100 Expedition, a special initiative commemorating the centenary of Finland's independence established in 2017. As Finland takes the helm of the Arctic Council for the first time, Arctia Ltd. has extended invitations to both Finnish and international researchers to join the adventure aboard the MSV Nordica.
