After facing a harrowing 14-day entrapment in thick sea ice, the research vessel 'Norseman II' has begun its journey back to Nome, Alaska, as of June 18, 2024. The vessel successfully navigated its way out of the ice early that morning and was moving through open waters to carry out necessary repairs. The 'Norseman II' had been adrift off the northern coast of the Seward Peninsula since June 4, carrying a crew of scientists and researchers on a pivotal mission to assess the abundance of Pacific walruses in the Bering and Chukchi seas. Originally departing from Nome on May 31 for a planned 29-day research cruise, the vessel encountered unexpected challenges when it became surrounded by ice. A report issued on June 16 by NOAA and the National Weather Service highlighted the vessel’s drifting northeast alongside the pack ice, remaining approximately 5 nautical miles from the nearest ice edge, while having traveled just over 200 nautical miles from its starting point. The cause of the vessel's troubles stemmed from a mechanical failure in the rudder system. However, thanks to robust safety protocols in place, the 'Norseman II' managed to maintain navigational control using its bow thruster and a manually operated tiller arm. Throughout the ordeal, U.S. Coast Guard District 17 maintained close communication with the vessel’s captain, who opted not to request assistance despite the presence of a large Coast Guard cutter in the Bering Sea ready to respond to emergencies year-round.
