Tragic Explosion Claims Life of Crew Member Aboard Northern Guard

Apr 09, 2014 09:42

On April 6, 2014, a devastating explosion rocked the cargo hold of the vessel 'Northern Guard' off the coast of Mumbai, resulting in the tragic death of a 25-year-old Chinese crew member. The unfortunate incident, believed to have originated from a container, prompted the ship to issue a distress signal received by the Mumbai Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC). Swift action was taken by the Indian Coast Guard, with a Dornier aircraft on patrol identifying the stricken vessel approximately 100 miles southwest of Mumbai. Traveling from Pipavav—which it departed on April 4—the 'Northern Guard' was bound for Colombo at the time of the explosion. In response to the emergency, the patrol boat 'Subhadra Kumari Chauhan' was directed to the scene to render medical aid to the crew. Arriving around 9:30 p.m. with both a medical and fire-fighting team, they assessed the situation before escorting the damaged ship back to Mumbai. The remains of the deceased crew member were subsequently transferred to the appropriate authorities. As of the morning of April 9, 2014, the 'Northern Guard' remained anchored in the same location on the outer roads of Mumbai.
