Northern Juvenile Cargo Fire Incident Near Port Klang

Jun 02, 2024 18:32

On May 26, 2024, a significant incident unfolded as a fire erupted aboard the container ship 'Northern Juvenile,' approximately 600 nautical miles from Port Klang. While comprehensive details regarding the severity of the blaze remain undisclosed, the carrier has issued a customer advisory urging shippers to promptly inform their cargo underwriters. In response to the emergency, the ship's owners have secured a salvage agreement with SMIT Salvors under the Lloyd's Open Form (LOF) to facilitate firefighting and salvage operations. Should General Average be declared, shippers could be subject to additional security requirements. The vessel's owner, Norddeutsche Reedere, is actively managing the salvage efforts. Prior to this incident, the 'Northern Juvenile' had stopped at Singapore on May 23 after its extensive journey that began with loading operations at Qingdao Port on May 7-8, followed by stops at Shanghai Port on May 9-10, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port on May 10-11, and Nansha Port on May 13-14. The 'Northern Juvenile' is fully loaded with cargo from China and is known to share containers with major players such as Maersk, COSCO, OOCL, and Hapag-Lloyd. The ship was en route to Pointe Noire, marking one of four scheduled stops along the West Coast of Africa before returning to Singapore. In the wake of the incident, two tugs were deployed to provide assistance, with the 'Maju Mercury' establishing a towing connection.
