Zim Shipping Faces Renewed Protests at Australian Ports
Protests have erupted against the Israeli shipping company Zim at Port Botany and the Port of Melbourne, raising concerns of escalating demonstrations as additional Zim vessels are set to arrive at Australian ports. On November 11, 2023, a group of pro-Palestinian activists congregated at Port Botany to disrupt the docking of the 'Contship Dax'. The protest was organized by the Palestine Justice Movement Sydney and Trade Unionists for Palestine, who announced their intentions on November 3, just ahead of the ship’s arrival. In response to the anticipated protests, NSW Police advised transport operators to refrain from transporting Zim-branded containers along Foreshore Road during the protest period. Initially, the 'Contship Dax' was expected to dock in Melbourne on November 8 before heading to Sydney on November 11; however, its itineraries were adjusted last week, and the vessel arrived in Sydney on November 8, with Melbourne now scheduled for November 17. Notably, Maritime Union of Australia flags were seen alongside Palestinian flags during the demonstration at Port Botany. This protest followed another significant event on November 9, where protesters occupied a roadway at Melbourne’s Webb Dock, effectively blocking the access to the Victoria International Container Terminal and the ACFS Webb Dock Empty Container Park in anticipation of another Zim vessel's arrival. Looking forward, the 'Calandra', another Zim-operated ship running under the Gold Star Line's China Asia Express (CAX) service, is slated to dock at Patrick East Swanson Dock on November 15. With prior protests occurring, there are concerns that this vessel may also become a focal point for additional protest actions in the Swanson Precinct.
