Master Rescued at Sea Near Richards Bay: A Timely Medevac Operation

Feb 14, 2020 09:15

On February 13, 2020, at 11:10 a.m., a critical request for medical evacuation was received by the NSRI Richards Bay from the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA). The vessel 'Bittern,' en route from Mombasa, needed urgent assistance as it approached the Port of Richards Bay. In response, the NSRI deployed the lifeboat 'Spirit of Round Table II' equipped with two Netcare 911 rescue paramedics. They rendezvoused with the ship offshore, where they discovered the master suffering from a severe traumatic injury due to a fall. His condition was critical at the time. Although an SA Air Force 15 Squadron Oryx helicopter was dispatched from Durban to aid in the evacuation, it was later stood down after TNPA Port Control arranged for the ship to dock promptly at the Dry Bulk Terminal. Once safely in port, the paramedics stabilized the patient aboard the vessel before transferring him to a Netcare 911 ambulance secured on a stretcher. He was then transported to a hospital in Durban, where he was reported to be in stable condition. The operation saw collaborative efforts among the MRCC, Telkom Maritime Radio Services, TNPA, Western Cape Government Health EMS, and the NSRI Emergency Operations Centre for seamless logistics and communication. Bulk Carrier Rescues Distressed Sailors off Madagascar

Oct 28, 2015 19:24

On October 27, 2015, at precisely 9:55 a.m., the CROSS Réunion responded to an emergency signal from the British sailing yacht "Ironhorse," which was in distress approximately 158 miles southeast of Madagascar. The two onboard sailors, both aged 70, had set off the distress beacon due to significant damage to the boat’s propulsion system, which left them unable to navigate. In response, CROSS Réunion promptly alerted nearby vessels to assist. The tanker "Fleves" was dispatched to the scene, while another vessel, the "Bittern," provided immediate support to the stranded sailors. By 1:35 p.m., the bulk carrier successfully retrieved the two sailors, ensuring they were unharmed. They were subsequently transported to Singapore for care. This incident highlights the vital role of maritime rescue operations in ensuring the safety of seafarers in distress.
