Emergency Medical Evacuation at Sea Near Stortemelk
On May 1, 2012, at 12:30 PM, a critical medevac operation unfolded in the North Sea involving the Dutch lifeboats "Arie Visser" and "Frans Hogewind" from KNRM stations in West Terschelling and Paal 8. The emergency was prompted by a medical crisis aboard the sailing vessel "Oban," located at coordinates 53° 25.7'N / 005° 00.7'E. The clipper redirected its course toward Stortemelk to rendezvous with the emergency boats. In a swift response, the "Frans Hogewind" was dispatched to the scene to deliver initial medical assistance, while the "Arie Visser" prepared to embark ambulance personnel. By 1:00 PM, the "Frans Hogewind" reached the "Oban" and transferred three medical professionals onboard, who immediately began administering life-saving treatment using an AED and oxygen. Shortly thereafter, the "Arie Visser" arrived, facilitating the transfer of additional crew and medical staff. Following a thorough examination, the patient was carefully placed on a stretcher and moved to the waiting "Arie Visser," which then sped towards Harlingen for urgent hospital care. Meanwhile, the personnel and equipment from the "Frans Hogewind" were returned from the "Oban" as it resumed its journey back to Paal 8.
