On May 29, 2024, the U.S. Coast Guard executed a critical medevac operation for a 31-year-old crew member aboard the bulk carrier 'Ocean Destiny,' located roughly 63 miles offshore from Southwest Pass, Louisiana. The emergency unfolded around 7 p.m. when watchstanders at Coast Guard District Eight received a distress call, alerting them to the man's urgent medical situation. In response, they promptly coordinated the launch of an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans, while also dispatching a HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew from the Coast Guard Aviation Training Center in Mobile to establish vital communications. Upon arrival at the scene, the helicopter crew successfully hoisted the ill individual aboard and transported him to University Medical Center in New Orleans, where he was reported to be in serious condition.
