Working Conditions Aboard the Ocean-Giant

The ice-strengthened HMNZS 'Aotearoa' is set to commence its journey to Antarctica as scheduled, while the 'Ocean Giant' of the US Antarctic Program (USAP) faces unexpected maintenance issues that will postpone its arrival at McMurdo Station by approximately 10 days. Located just three kilometers from New Zealand's Scott Base, McMurdo's cargo operations are now anticipated to wrap up by late February 2022 due to this hold-up. As a result, the USAP has adjusted its logistics to expedite the fuel tanker’s arrivals and departures. Paul Woodgate, Antarctica New Zealand logistics coordinator, reassured that the delayed 'Ocean Giant' will not lead to any supply shortages at Scott Base. The HMNZS 'Aotearoa' is predicted to reach the McMurdo Ice Pier in the second week of February, with its departure aligning with that of HMNZS 'Canterbury', which is transporting additional supplies and enhanced water production capabilities, alongside the Australian Navy’s HMAS 'Adelaide'. The 'Canterbury' had already set sail on January 23, bringing along New Zealand Army personnel and vehicles, while the 'Ocean Giant' departed from Los Angeles on January 10, en route to Lyttelton with an estimated arrival time of February 4.
