The Ocean-Seagull: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

On January 27, 2014, the freighter Ocean Seagull experienced a critical engine failure while navigating the tumultuous North Pacific waters. The vessel found itself adrift at coordinates 46 12N 150 50E, approximately 12 miles northeast of Urup Island, one of the Kuril Islands, amid severe weather conditions characterized by southeast winds reaching 25 meters per second and towering seas estimated between six to seven meters. Alerted to the situation, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) Petropavlovsk promptly dispatched the salvage tug Spravedliviy and the freighter FESCO Novik to lend assistance. At 9:35 PM Moscow time, the Ocean Seagull was reported to be drifting just five miles from the shore at a pace of 1.2 knots. Meanwhile, the vessel's crew was diligently working to resolve the engine issues. Their efforts paid off when, at 12:35 PM on January 28, they successfully restarted the engine, allowing the Ocean Seagull to continue its journey from Everett to Nagoya, much to the relief of all involved.
