Sea Tow Successfully Refloats Grounded 'Ocean Spirit 1' in the Virgin Islands
In a commendable operation, Captain Alan Wentworth, the owner of the Sea Tow Virgin Islands franchise, collaborated with the captain of the grounded vessel 'Ocean Spirit 1' on January 23 to evaluate the ship's condition. Fortunately, initial assessments revealed no breaches in the hull. Captain Wentworth enlisted the expertise of diver Captain Anne Allard to conduct an underwater inspection. The vessel had run aground up to mid-ship and was precariously shifting on the rocks. The only discernible damage was to the keel coolers. After reviewing the underwater footage and conferring with the ship's captain, Captain Wentworth made the strategic decision to wait until the high tide at 12:50 p.m. for a successful refloat. As noon approached, a collaborative effort commenced with three Sea Tow vessels. Two powerful triple-engine boats pulled from the stern while a third vessel pushed from the side, skillfully maneuvering the 'Ocean Spirit 1' off the rocks. The coordinated effort by Captain Wentworth’s crew, alongside six U.S. Coast Guard vessels, ensured the safe recovery of the ship without any injuries or environmental hazards reported.
Ocean Spirit I Grounded Near Charlotte Amalie: An Update
On January 23, 2018, the cargo vessel 'Ocean Spirit I' found itself aground near Charlotte Amalie, located in St. Petersburg, US Virgin Islands. Fortunately, no damage or oil spill has been reported from the vessel. The US Coast Guard in San Juan was alerted at 5 a.m. following the incident, which occurred just outside the entrance to the East Gregory Channel. In response, inspectors were dispatched to assess the situation. The crew of 'Ocean Spirit I' conducted a thorough examination of the fuel and ballast tanks, while Sea Tow-St. Thomas performed a hull inspection. Meanwhile, Coast Guard personnel collaborated with the vessel's captain and owner, as well as salvors, to mitigate any potential environmental risks and safeguard the ship’s hull during efforts to dislodge it from the rocky seabed. Despite the grounding, the entrance to the East Gregory Channel remained accessible for other maritime traffic.
