Search for Missing Egyptair Flight MS804 Yields No Evidence at Sea
Since May 19, 2016, the ultramax vessel "Oceanus" has been diligently engaged in the search and rescue operations for the missing Egyptair aircraft, MS804, which disappeared over the Mediterranean Sea. Despite relentless efforts, the crew aboard the "Oceanus" reported no signs of debris or fuel at the coordinates of the last electronic transmission received from the aircraft. The search persisted through the night, as previously circulating reports of wreckage discovered near Karpathos were later withdrawn. Captain A. Rotashnyuk, at the helm of the "Oceanus," confirmed that while several items were found—such as a blanket, a canister, and fragments of plastic—none were definitively identified as belonging to the missing Airbus A320-200. The ship has anchored since 6 a.m. and will remain at the location for the foreseeable future, having altered its original route from Odessa to Damietta to assist in the search efforts. Numerous other vessels, including both civilian and military ships, joined the operation. Warships from Egypt, France, and Greece are part of the ongoing search. Additionally, the Mediterranean Shipping Co. announced the arrival of the "MSC Caitlin" and "MSC Beatrice," which had been navigating between Crete and Rhodes. The "MSC Beatrice" commenced its support efforts shortly after 6:30 a.m. but was stood down at 9:30 a.m., whereas the "MSC Caitlin" began its involvement at 6:20 a.m. and continues to assist. The Maersk line also reported that the “Maersk Stadelhorn” was already in the search area, while the Royal Navy vessel RFA "Lyme Bay" reached the vicinity of the aircraft's last known location late on May 19. Flight MS804 departed from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, carrying 56 passengers and 10 crew members, before mysteriously vanishing in the early hours of May 19. Search and rescue teams had detected a signal from an emergency locator transmitter, indicating a possible crash site. Preliminary data suggested the aircraft was cruising at 37,000 feet over the Mediterranean, approximately 130 miles north of Alexandria and around 210 miles north-northwest of Cairo when it lost transponder signals at 2:33 a.m. local time. A merchant ship captain reported observing a flame in the sky near where the plane disappeared, though Captain Rotashnyuk stated he had not personally seen such an occurrence.
