Engine Failure Incident Near Sanda Lighthouse Involving MV Emma
On February 8, 2018, at approximately 04:20 a.m., the MV Emma, which was journeying from Halmstad to Ayr with a crew of seven, experienced a major engine failure while drifting off the coast. The incident occurred at coordinates 55 16 51.6 N and 24 22.2 W, roughly 6.2 miles east of Sanda Lighthouse. In response to the emergency, the Campbeltown lifeboat was deployed to standby near the vessel for safety. The Stornoway Coast Guard reached out to check the availability of tugboats to assist in the situation. However, the dedicated crew aboard the Emma successfully managed to restart the main engine and resumed their journey toward Ayr at 08:34 a.m. To ensure safe navigation, a communication protocol was established, allowing for updates every 30 minutes. Ultimately, the MV Emma safely docked at its destination at 6 p.m. the same day.
Collision Incident at Kiel-Holtenau Locks Involving 'Ocean Freedom' and 'Emma'
A maritime incident occurred on June 25, 2017, at 9:15 p.m. when the vessel 'Ocean Freedom' (IMO: 9506722), arriving from Douala, collided with the 'Emma' within the Kiel Canal's Kiel-Holtenau locks. During a mooring operation, the 'Ocean Freedom's' aft inadvertently swung toward the 'Emma,' which was already securely docked in the lock. This resulted in the crane boom of the 'Ocean Freedom' striking an antenna on the 'Emma,' leading to its collapse. While initial assessments were conducted, potential additional damage to the port side of the 'Emma' was also acknowledged. Following the accident, the locks were temporarily closed to all shipping traffic until 10:15 p.m. The 'Ocean Freedom' resumed its journey at 10:45 p.m. after local authorities completed their investigation. It successfully docked at Fredericia's Ocean Quay at approximately 9 a.m. on June 26. The 'Emma,' which was navigating from Ijmuiden to Halmstad, arrived at Lindenau Yard in Kiel at 8:15 p.m. on June 25 for necessary repairs.
