Bulk Carrier Comes to the Rescue of Distressed Yacht in Atlantic

Jun 09, 2015 09:41

On June 8, 2015, a dramatic rescue unfolded approximately 350 miles southeast of Long Island Sound, New York, when the U.S. Coast Guard, along with the bulk carrier 'Odysseas L,' provided critical assistance to the stranded sailing vessel 'Alien 1.' The incident began when the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Halifax alerted the Coast Guard command center at the 1st Coast Guard District around 5 p.m. on June 7, reporting that the 44-foot yacht had gone disabled with two individuals on board. The 'Odysseas L,' traveling from Brake to Baltimore, was the first to respond, notifying RCC Halifax of the situation and agreeing to stay on scene until rescuers arrived. The Coast Guard Cutter 'Spencer' from Boston quickly responded to the distress call. Once they reached the scene, a crew member from the 'Spencer' used a small boat to transfer the two people from 'Alien 1' to safety aboard the cutter. Subsequently, the 'Spencer' secured the yacht and is now en route toward land, ensuring the welfare of those onboard.
