Nine Suspects Held for Cocaine Trafficking Linked to Channel Islands

Apr 09, 2025 12:00

On April 8, 2025, the Rennes prosecutor's office confirmed that nine individuals, including three fishermen, have been remanded in custody as part of an investigation into cocaine trafficking involving bales dropped near the Channel Islands. The bulk carrier 'Omicron Eagle,' which set sail from Paranagua, was found to have dumped over 600 kg of cocaine near the islands of Guernsey and Jersey. The vessel was en route to Dunkirk before being stationary in Amsterdam as of April 9. The significant drug haul was recovered from the sea by fishermen from Ouistreham, who then transferred it to a speedboat that navigated to Tancarville. Here, law enforcement officials confiscated 630 kg of cocaine, valued at an estimated €37 million. Following their court appearance, the nine suspects were placed in custody; among them was a Belgian of Albanian descent alleged to have aided in retrieving the drugs on the fishing trawler. Additionally, three Filipino crew members from the 'Omicron Eagle' are accused of deliberately discarding the drug-laden bales into the sea as the Normandy trawler approached. Those fishermen involved in the recovery and transportation of the cocaine to the French shoreline were likewise remanded in custody. Partners of two of the detained fishermen have also been placed under judicial supervision. Authorities have also indicted and remanded two intermediaries based in Le Havre, bringing attention to the extensive trafficking network that was disrupted following an 18-month-long investigation. This case marks a significant achievement as it is reportedly the first instance of a drop-off delivery being intercepted. The operation on April 3 mobilized around one hundred police officers from Normandy, the RAID, and the Anti-Narcotics Office (Ofast), alongside support from the Maritime Gendarmerie and gendarmes from Hauts-de-France. They utilized various resources including three patrol boats, a helicopter, and a Coast Guard vessel during this extensive crackdown.

NTSB Investigation Unveils Details of $4.3 Million Allision Involving Bulk Carrier

Apr 26, 2017 23:16

On April 26, 2017, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released a comprehensive Marine Accident Brief regarding a significant allision involving the bulk carrier Star of Abu Dhabi. This incident occurred on March 26, 2016, when the 739-foot Panama-flagged vessel collided with the Louisiana Sugar Refinery near Gramercy, Louisiana. At approximately 2:30 AM, the Star of Abu Dhabi was anchored in the Lower Grandview Anchorage, stationed at mile marker 146.2 on the Lower Mississippi River. During the early hours of the morning, the critical failure occurred when the vessel's port anchor chain detached, leading the starboard anchor to start dragging. Consequently, the ship drifted with the current and collided with the Louisiana Sugar Refinery's unloading dock located just a mile marker downstream at 146.1. Despite the vessel being under the threat of drifting, the crew managed to regain control of the Star of Abu Dhabi by activating the propulsion engine, bringing the ship to a halt about 0.1 miles from the Veterans Memorial Bridge—commonly recognized as the Gramercy Bridge. In terms of financial impact, the Star of Abu Dhabi suffered $232,210 in damages, primarily to its hull above the waterline. However, the Louisiana Sugar Refinery bore the brunt of the incident, facing a staggering $4.6 million in damages to its dock infrastructure. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and there were no incidents of pollution resulting from the allision.

Significant Damage Revealed on Detained Bulk Carrier 'Star of Abu Dhabi' Following Mississippi River Collision

Apr 04, 2016 10:51

Recent images obtained by gCaptain have unveiled extensive damage to the bulk carrier, Star of Abu Dhabi, following a reported collision with a Louisiana sugar refinery dock. This incident occurred on March 25 when the vessel, which had been securely moored, broke loose and drifted into the dock of Louisiana Sugar Refinery, LLC situated in Gramercy, Louisiana. In response to the damages, Louisiana Sugar filed a lawsuit on May 28, claiming that the allision has resulted in approximately $20 million in damages, significantly impacting their operational profits. The parties named in the lawsuit include Abu Dhabi Shipping International, S.A., the operator Fairmont Shipping (H.K.) Ltd., and the Japan Shipowners P&I Association. The photographs illustrating the damage were captured on March 27 as the Star of Abu Dhabi navigated the Mississippi River towards Geismar, Louisiana, where it was reported moored as of Friday.
